Maryland's Eastern Shore

This week I'm in Ocean City, Maryland, teaching a couple of workshops at the Art League of O.C. The beach is cold this time of year, but hey -- a cold beach is better than NO beach! O.C. is absolutely FABULOUS! Even in winter! The Art League is putting me up a the posh oceanfront Princess Royale Hotel. The art center is just around the corner, only a few blocks away. I totally freakin LOVE this place!

View from the balcony of my hotel room.

Finding the Art Center was easy-peasy! They are right underneath the water tower, which can be seen for miles!

The Art Center is on the back bay, right on the water. This is the view from my classroom. Yeah. It's that good!

Some of my wonderful, talented students in my workshop today! We had a complete BLAST! What a fun group! <3 p="">
and after class, I have to go back to my room and this view again. I LOVE my job!!!!
We finished two paintings today, but I forgot to take a group photo. I'll be posting those later!

workshops and more workshops!

I'm down in Charleston right now, teaching a second week of workshops. I head back north next week to teach a week in Ocean City, Maryland. There's a last minute opening for a couple of seats in my workshop in Ocean City! Act NOW if you want to get in!

Here's a photo from last week's workshop in Charleston!

Glazing with perceived colors on monochromatic complementary under-paintings

In my winter semester classes, my students learn to glaze with perceived colors over complementary monochromatic underpaintings. This is a classical technique that is most familiar to oil or acrylic painting, but can be used to add dramatic colors to any medium, including watercolor.
Below are some examples of what my students did this semester!

Here, my student painted green for the apple and then painted red over it. Next they painted Violet for the pear, and glazed with yellow. The last one is blue for the pumpkin, with orange as the glaze.

This is one of my demos that I painted, to show the technique to my students. I painted the apple in violet, first. Then I glazed over it in yellow.

My students had a blast with this lesson! I use this lesson to reinforce their learning of color theory, light and values, color mixing, and more. In addition to setting the values, letting some of the underpainting show through the glaze layer adds a dramatic pop of complementary color to paintings.
